Antônio Jorge da Mota Rodrigues, Head of Howden Re Brasil, recently joined panelists at a climate conference in Rio De Janeiro to discuss possibilities for increasing resources for the climate emergency in urban centres.

“The Impacts of Climate Change: How to Scale Financing for Adaptation and Build Resilient Cities” was an event by the Institute for Climate and Society (iCS), an organization dedicated to accelerating the transition to a low-carbon and climate-resilient society in Brazil through public policies, innovation, and engagement with various sectors of society. ICS partnerned with the National Confederation of Insurers (CNSeg), the Itausa Institute, Prefeitura do Rio de JaneiroClimate Policy Initiative / Cities Climate Finance Leadership Alliance (CCFLA), the Museum of Tomorrow and Ministério das Cidades. The event, a precursor to G20 and COP30 in Brazil discussions, brought together strategic policymakers and stakeholders from economic, governmental and international sectors, to assess progress, discuss challenges, and identify innovative solutions to promote adaptation finance and the development of resilient cities.

AJ commented: “It was an honour to participate on this climate change event as one of the panelists. The impact of climate change on our society and industry is a topic of great importance, as is the role of re/insurance in supporting communities and regions in building resiliance against ever evolving extreme weather challenges. This is critical to Brazil and the LAtaAm region, being particularly vulnerable to this emerging reality.”

“This event was held one day prior to the G20 Ministries of Finance’s meeting to be hosted here in Rio de Janeiro, and will be part of the roadmap to unlock the flow of adaptation resources and initiatives on the path from G20 in November to COP30 which will be in Brazil at the state of Para in 2025. The discussion about climate change, its impact on to the environment and communities and the ways to mitigate it is a global need.”

The objectives of the event included:

  • Defining strategic agendas to consider the fiscal and investment implications of climate impacts;
  • Stimulating best practices to integrate resilience into urban infrastructure;
  • Assessing the development of existing initiatives in adaptation finance and risk management;
  • Promoting an international network of participants to enhance ambition in tangible recommendations and resilience strategies;
  • Issuing recommendations to encourage the integration of resilience into infrastructure design and city planning.
